The varsity football team traveled to Lakota East Friday night and behind a great defensive effort the Elks were able to bring home a 9-6 victory. The Elks were able to hold Lakota East to 151 yards of total offense and get a huge turnover at the end of the game to secure the win.
There were your usual first game jitters on both sides of the ball Friday night as both teams made mistakes that as players gain experience those mistakes will disappear. As you watch the game Friday night it felt as if the Elks should be winning by 2-3 scores but credit must be given to Lakota East for continuing to fight and make plays to keep themselves in the game.
The Elks were able to get a 45 yard field goal by Jackson Courville to take a 3-0 lead into the half. In the 2nd half Emable Wakilongo ran it in from 3 yards out to give the Elks a 9-0 lead as the 2 point conversion failed. The Elks then returned a Ross Coppock interception to the East 5 yard line but missed a field goal. Then the Elks fumbled at the East 1 yard line and the Thunderhawks returned that fumble to their own 38 yard line and then drove for their only score and the Elks blocked the PAT.
East roughed the Elks' punter late in the game to secure the 9-6 win for the Elks who are now 1-0 and will play at home this week vs. Dublin Coffman at 7 pm Friday night. It is Wee Elk Football and Middle School Football night!
