The varsity football team traveled down Route 48 Friday night to play a Fairmont squad that had been on a roll. Fairmont had recently beat Springfield and Wayne and in those wins the Firebirds were able to do what they do, run the football and possess the ball over and over.

The Elks came to town Friday night and gave the Firebirds a little dose of their own medicine by winning the time of possession game 27:27 to 20:33. The Elks were able to stay balanced enough on offense that it kept the Firebird defense guessing but the Elks absolutely knew what was coming their way from Fairmont and the defense stepped up to lead the charge and played lights out all night.

Fairmont only had 43 total snaps on offense all night with 34 rushes for 93 yards. The Birds were able to hit a few of their play action seem passes and on their last drive hit some razzle dazzle pass plays for a total 68 passing yards on the night. But the Elk defense stood up and dominated this game and the offense ran for 97 yards and threw for 100 yards and provided the only points of the game as Braylon Newcomb hit Nic Bruder for a 13 yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter for the only points of the game.

The Firebirds never really threatened all night and the Elks missed 3 field goal attempts throughout the night that could have provided some insurance points but thank goodness the Elks did not need those points. The mix of youth on the field along with great play and leadership from our seniors was the winning recipe on this night. The team played selfless and passionate all night and when Mason Keely intercepted the Firebirds last gasp pass the Elks had finished the business trip they had taken on Friday night. The Elks were physical all night!

This win guarantees the Elks a home game week #1 of the playoffs and raises their overall record to 7-2 and 4-2 in the GWOC. The Elks will end their regular season next Friday October 21st by hosting the Wayne Warriors on Senior Night at 7:00 pm. Much will be on the line as a win over Wayne would assure the Elks a top 4 finish in Region 2 and an opportunity to host 2 playoff games.
