The varsity girls basketball team hosted Wayne on Saturday for Senior Night. The girls were trying finish a unique trifecta of beating all 3 teams that had beat them in the first round of GWOC play. The Lady Elks had already knocked off Beavercreek and Springboro and now had their sights set on the Lady Wayne Warriors.

The fist half saw the Lady Elks play their characteristically great defense along with outstanding hustle by all the girls to lead 15-9 after the 1st quarter and 31-25 at the half. Kendal George had 11 points at the half and Anna Grim had 11 points at the half.

The third quarter was a back and forth battle with the Warriors forcing the Elks into some turnovers and Brooklyn Hall from Wayne led the Warriors back to lead 38-36 over the Lady Elks to begin the 4th quarter.

Hall scored the first 3 points of the 4th quarter and the Lady Elks trailed 36-41 with just over 6 minutes to play. The senior Kendal George hit a 2-pointer followed by a 3-pointer and fellow senior Anna Grim added a 2-pointer and just like that with 5:04 to play the Lady Elks led 43-41. The Lady Warriors took the lead back on 4 straight points by Hall and led 45-43 with 2:01 to play. Katelyn Palomino hit a bucket with 1:33 to play to tie the game. Then with 3.5 seconds to play Palomino was fouled going to the bucket, she had to come out of the game and Bella Keeton came off the bench to shoot 2 free-throws. Keeton drained both free-throws and the Lady Elks held on for an awesome 47-45 win.

Kendal George had 17 points and Anna Grim 15 points to lead the Lady Elks in scoring. The entire team contributed across the board on defense and hustle plays! The win brings the Lady Elks to 15-7 overall to close out the regular season. The Elks finish 10-4 in the GWOC and alone in 3rd place. the Freshmen team beat Oakwood 49-25 and the JV team beat Wayne 50-45 for a clean sweep on the day for the Lady Elks.

What a fantastic season for this team and Coach Priefer. Overcoming some injury adversity and figuring out a way to just compete and win games, that is what this program does every year. The Lady Elks now go into tournament play with their first game being on Monday February 13th at Butler vs. the winner of Chaminade/Miamisburg at 6:00 pm. A reminder that all OHSAA tickets are only available online at www.ohsaa.org/tickets. You no longer use Ticket Spicket for tickets once you start tourney play.
