Centerville Stadium roared to life on a crisp Friday evening as the Centerville Elks Varsity Football team triumphed over the Lakota East Thunderhawks with a resounding 30-12 victory in their exhilarating season opener. The energy was palpable as over 4,000 fans filled the stands, eager to witness the showdown between these two formidable teams.

From the outset, the Centerville Elks displayed their determination and prowess on the field. Junior Braylon Newcomb ignited the scoreboard with a powerful 3-yard run, thrusting the Elks ahead 7-0 with 6 minutes and 16 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. The Thunderhawks, however, swiftly countered with a 43-yard touchdown pass. Though their point-after attempt was thwarted by an emphatic block, the Thunderhawks narrowed the lead to 7-6, keeping the contest intense with 5 minutes and 15 seconds left in the first quarter.

The game's momentum remained in flux as Lakota East's quarterback surged into the end zone from 15 yards out, propelling his team into a 12-7 lead with 11 minutes and 44 seconds remaining in the first half. The Elks refused to be outdone, answering the call with 7 minutes and 33 seconds on the clock. Newcomb showcased his versatility by connecting with Jamar Montgomery for an 8-yard touchdown pass, propelling the Elks to a 14-12 lead as the halftime whistle sounded.

Returning to the field for the second half, the Centerville Elks' defense emerged as a formidable force. Their unrelenting pressure on the Lakota East quarterback combined with well-timed stops shifted the game's dynamics. On the opening drive of the second half, kicker Leland Gantz demonstrated his accuracy, nailing a 36-yard field goal to extend the Elks' lead to 17-12.

The third quarter continued to favor the Elks, as Newcomb notched his second touchdown of the game, sprinting 4 yards into the end zone with 1 minute and 33 seconds remaining. Despite a failed 2-point conversion attempt, the Elks widened the gap to 23-12, setting the tone for their dominant second half.

With their defense firmly in control, the Elks executed their game plan flawlessly. With 5 minutes and 46 seconds left in the game, Daniel Kamara bulldozed his way through the Thunderhawks' defense, solidifying the victory with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Elks now held a commanding 30-12 lead and confidently closed out the game to secure their opening victory.

Several standout players propelled the Centerville Elks to this triumphant start. Senior quarterback Drake Wells exhibited his expertise, completing 16 out of 22 passes for an impressive 172 yards. Senior Daniel Kamara's contributions were equally noteworthy, rushing for 84 yards and adding a crucial touchdown. However, it was Junior Braylon Newcomb who shone brightest, earning two rushing touchdowns, making 8 receptions for 51 yards, and even delivering a touchdown pass. Junior Jamar Montgomery's impact was undeniable with 8 receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown of his own.

Defensively, the Elks were led by Senior Landon King, who tallied 8 tackles, and Senior Reggie Powers, who recorded 7 tackles. Junior Jackson Puckett rounded out the defensive efforts with 7 tackles, demonstrating the team's collective determination to stymie the Thunderhawks' advances.
