The varsity football team traveled to Dublin Coffman Friday night and the Elks were never able to get things going as a team. The Shamrocks were a very focused and determined team and were able to make the plays they needed to knock off the Elks.

The Elks took the the opening kickoff from their own 20 yard line and drove inside the Coffman 30 yard line and then threw the first of their 2 interceptions as Coffman was able to stop that drive. Each team then traded punts and the first quarter ended tied at 0-0. The Elks made some costly penalties and then with 7:45 left in the game the Coffman QB ran 36 yards for a TD to put the Rocks up 7-0. The Coffman QB hurt the Elks all night running 18 times for 132 yards. The Elks answered this score at the 2:48 mark of the 2nd quarter with Drake Wells hitting Braylon Newcomb with a 10 yard TD pass to tie the game 7-7. Coffman was able to move the ball to the Elk 33 yard line and the Coffman kicker hit the first of his 3 field goals from 39 yards out to give Coffman a 10-7 lead at the half.

Starting the 2nd half, Coffman had the ball to begin the 3rd quarter and drove deep into Elk territory but the Elks defense was able to force a punt. On first down after gaining first down yardage the Elk receiver fumbled the ball away to Coffman on their own 20 yard line and the Shamrocks turned that into a 22 yard field goal to take a 13-7 lead with 2:40 left in the 3rd quarter after the defense made a great stop. Each team traded quick 3 and outs and to start the 4th quarter the Rocks punted to the Elks and we took over at our own 24 yard line.

The Elks drove 76 yards as Braylon Newcomb shook free for a 33 yard TD run and the Elks had their first lead of the game at 14-13 with 7:56 to go in the game. From this point on Dublin Coffman took control of the game and pulled off the upset. They drove 70 yards for a TD but the 2 point conversion was stopped and the Elks trailed 19-15 with 5:14 left in the game. The Elks took over on their own 20 yard line and then made their 3rd and final turnover of the game throwing an interception at their own 19 yard line. The defense stepped up and forced a 45 yard FG which put Coffman up 22-14 with 3:30 left. The Elks could not protect the QB on the next drive and forced a punt and Coffman ran out the clock to end the game.

The combination of turnovers, penalties and lack of playmaking contributed to the loss for the Elks. Credit must be given to Coffman who made the plays when needed and were up to the task of upsetting the Elks. It gets no easier for the Elks as the team welcomes Pickerington Central to Centerville Stadium on Friday night for Staff Appreciation and Centerville City Gold Rush night.
