It was a beautiful night at Premier Health Field last night as the Centerville Elks traveled to Clayton to take on the Northmont Thunderbolts. Both teams entered the game with 3-1 records in what promised to be a GWOC classic!
The game started with the Elks on a roll as they fielded a short squib kickoff and proceeded to go on a 57 yard drive capped off by a Parker Johnson 1 yard touchdown run. The game would then be taken over by two great defenses. Neither offense was able to get much going until the end of the half when Northmont was driving deep into Elk territory. With one minute left in the half, Northmont would put up a pass in back right corner of the endzone that was intercepted Seth Alejandrino! This was a huge stop for the Elks and helped the Elks gain momentum going into the half up 7-0!
Coming out of the half, the Bolts were able to go 80 yards on their opening drive and were able to score on a 6 yard run by Calilien Grant, and the game was tied 7-7 with 7:40 to go in the third quarter. Northmont was then able to put one more score in on an 82 yard TD pass to Dalin Wilkins, but the Bolts missed the extra point and would take the lead 13-7. The missed extra point would prove to be huge in this game.
The defenses took over once again as both offenses struggled to put points on the board until the start of the fourth quarter. Then, with 11:08 left in the game Drake Wells was able to find Bryce Cowgill for a 25 yard TD pass! The Elks would take the lead 14-13 and would never give it back! Northmont would have a couple of offensive opportunities, but were ultimately unsuccessful against the Centerville Defense! The Centerville offense was able to convert two huge first downs at the end of the game and were able to kneel out the clock and move to 4-1 on the season! This was a great team win for the Elks!
Our Elks will be back in action next Friday night at home against Springboro in our Homecoming Game!
