In a thrilling matchup that showcased the fierce competition between two Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) powerhouses, the Centerville Elks Varsity Football team hosted the Springfield Wildcats in the OHSAA Regional Quarterfinals. The Elks fell to Springfield with a final score of 17-10, marking the end of their terrific season at 9-3 overall.

Springfield got the scoring started with 4:03 left in the first quarter with a 38-yard touchdown pass, putting the Wildcats up 7-0. The Elks, however, weren't going to let the early deficit deter them. With 11 minutes left in the first half, Leland Gantz showcased his kicking prowess by drilling a 39-yard field goal, narrowing the gap to 7-3 in favor of Springfield.

Throughout the first half, both teams' defenses played well, preventing their opponents from finding the end zone. As the halftime whistle blew, the score remained a tight 7-3.

The Wildcats came out of the locker room and embarked on an impressive drive, taking them all the way down to the Elks' 11-yard line. With a fourth and 1 situation, Springfield opted to go for it, hoping to increase their advantage. However, the Elks' resilient defense rose to the occasion, making a crucial stop and gaining possession at their own 11-yard line.

The second half continued to be a defensive battle, with both teams refusing to yield any ground. As the game entered the fourth quarter, the Wildcats still clung to their slim 7-3 lead.

With only 6:03 remaining in the game, the Wildcats capitalized on an Elk interception, converting it into a 27-yard field goal to extend their lead to 10-3. The Elks turned the ball over once more with another interception, allowing Springfield to seize the opportunity and punch in a critical touchdown with a 9-yard run, increasing their lead to 17-3.

Despite the adversity, the Elks fought back with a 71-yard drive, culminating in a 14-yard touchdown run by Shane Cole with just 35 seconds left in the game. The touchdown brought the score to 17-10.

However, the onside kick attempt in the closing moments was unsuccessful, and Springfield secured the win, bringing an end to Centerville's incredible season. The Elks finished the season with a 9-3 record and the title of GWOC Champs, providing much to be proud of despite the heartbreaking loss in the regional quarterfinals.
