On Wednesday night, the Varsity Girls Basketball team clashed with Fairmont in an intense Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) showdown.

Despite a valiant effort from the Lady Elks, the game didn't start as smoothly as hoped. In the first half, the team struggled to find their shooting rhythm. However, they compensated for this with tenacious defense and gritty determination, matching Fairmont's intensity step for step.

At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Elks found themselves trailing by a narrow margin, with the scoreboard reading 9-8 in favor of Fairmont. However, they rallied in the second quarter, seizing the lead with a score of 18-17 at halftime. Despite encountering foul trouble early on, the Lady Elks showcased resilience, clinging to their slight lead as they entered the locker room.

The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets, each adding 14 points to their tally. Heading into the final quarter, the Lady Elks maintained a slim lead of 32-31. However, the momentum shifted in the fourth quarter, as costly turnovers, missed shots, and free throw struggles plagued the Centerville squad. Fairmont capitalized on these opportunities, outscoring the Lady Elks 17-10 in the final stretch, ultimately securing a hard-fought victory with a final score of 48-42.

Despite the loss, standout performances emerged from the Centerville side. Emily Grim led the team with 12 points, closely followed by Bella Keeton with 11 points. Their contributions highlighted the team's fighting spirit and determination to compete at a high level.

In other matches of the evening, the 9th-grade team suffered a close defeat to Fairmont, with a final score of 35-32, while the Junior Varsity team emerged victorious with a score of 39-32, showcasing the depth and talent within the Centerville basketball program.
