Girls Basketball Celebrates Their Seniors, Knocks Off Ponitz

The Centerville Girls Varsity Basketball Team hosted the Ponitz Golden Panthers on Senior Night Saturday. Prior to the game, the Lady Elks honored seniors Leona Ciarlariello, Emily Grim, and Kaitlyn Palomino, recognizing their dedication and contributions to the team.

The evening kicked off with a burst of energy as the Lady Elks quickly asserted their dominance on the court. With determination and skill, they jumped to an impressive 20-11 lead after the first quarter of play, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

As the game progressed, both teams battled fiercely, but it was the Lady Elks who maintained their momentum. Despite a challenging second quarter where both teams struggled to score, the Lady Elks maintained their lead, heading into halftime with a score of 27-16.

Coach Priefer and his seniors rallied the team during halftime, motivating them to push even harder in the second half. Their efforts paid off as the Lady Elks emerged from the locker room with renewed vigor, outscoring the Golden Panthers 39-17 in the second half.

The final buzzer sounded, signaling a resounding victory for the Lady Elks with a final score of 66-33. Cheers and applause filled the gymnasium as the team celebrated their well-deserved win, making Senior Night a memorable one for the seniors and the entire team. Leading the Elks in scoring were Caroline McDowell with 11 points, Senior Leona Ciarlariello added 9 points and Senior Emily Grim had 8 points and 11 rebounds. All girls dressed scored for the Lady Elks!

With this victory, the Varsity team's season record now stands at 12-8, with a conference record of 7-5 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC). The Junior Varsity (JV) team also showcased their skills, securing a dominant win over Ponitz with a final score of 42-9.

Looking ahead, the Lady Elks are gearing up for their next challenge as they travel to Springboro on Wednesday. The action-packed evening will feature the 9th grade team playing at 5:00 pm, followed by the JV team at 6:15 pm, and the Varsity team at 7:30 pm.
