The Varsity Wheelchair Basketball team made history with their first-ever regular season, concluding it with a thrilling home game against Beavercreek on Friday night. This game was particularly special as it marked the fourth meeting between the two teams, with Beavercreek being the only other local school to field a team. Both teams had to travel approximately two hours to compete, making the match even more significant.

The atmosphere in the Centerville Gymnasium was electric, with over 300 spectators filling the stands to witness an incredible game of wheelchair basketball.

In the first half, Beavercreek maintained control, but the Elks stayed within striking distance. Evan Wierwille contributed 4 points, and Luke Wilcutt added 2 points in the first quarter as the Elks trailed 10-6. The second quarter saw both teams only scoring a bucket each, with Luke Wilcutt notching his second basket, leaving the Elks trailing 12-8 at halftime.

During halftime, Coach Kenya Smith and Stacy Riste rallied the team, calming them down and making crucial adjustments. The Elks responded by intensifying their defensive pressure and executing a more dynamic offensive strategy, spreading the ball around.

The third quarter was a turning point for the Elks, as they outscored Beavercreek 8-2. Elly Dabbelt led the charge with 6 points in the quarter, supported by Luke and Evan with a basket each. This strong performance propelled the Elks into the lead, 16-14, heading into the fourth quarter.

With the momentum on their side, the Elks continued their defensive pressure in the final quarter. Kai Smith and Evan each contributed a basket, securing a hard-fought 20-16 victory for the Elks.

Finishing their inaugural regular season with a 5-5 record, including a commendable 3-1 record against Beavercreek, the team now eagerly awaits their seed in the upcoming post-season tournament.

The athletes and coaches of the Centerville Varsity Wheelchair Basketball team demonstrated remarkable resilience, skill, and teamwork throughout the season, and their success is a testament to their dedication and hard work. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the supporters who came out to cheer on these inspiring athletes in this historic event.
