Boys Basketball Wins 4th Straight Regional Title In Thrilling Fashion

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team delivered a performance for the ages on Saturday as they faced off against the Moeller Crusaders in the Regional Finals at the Cintas Center. In a game filled with drama, intensity, and remarkable plays, the Elks emerged victorious with a thrilling 70-69 win in double overtime, solidifying their quest for a fourth consecutive trip to the OHSAA Final Four.

From the opening tip-off, it was evident that this game would be one to remember. Both teams showcased their skills and determination, trading baskets and defensive stops in a back-and-forth battle that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The first quarter saw Moeller taking an early lead at 12-9, displaying their offensive prowess and athleticism.

However, the Elks quickly found their rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Crusaders 20-11 and heading into halftime with a 29-23 lead. Eli Greenberg led the charge with 9 points, while Jamar Montgomery and Jonathan Powell each contributed 8 points, showcasing the depth and talent of the Centerville squad.

The third quarter saw the Elks extending their lead to 35-23 with a strong start, but Moeller fought back fiercely, closing the gap as the quarter progressed. Despite a valiant effort from the Crusaders, a clutch tip-in by Baboucarr Njie at the buzzer kept the Elks ahead 39-33 heading into the final quarter.

As the game entered its closing minutes, the Elks appeared to have control with a 46-34 lead and just over four minutes remaining. However, Moeller staged a remarkable comeback, fueled by full-court defensive pressure and timely shots. With missed free throws and turnovers plaguing Centerville down the stretch, the Crusaders managed to tie the game at 54-54 with only 10 seconds left, forcing the game into overtime.

The first overtime period saw Moeller taking an early lead at 58-54 and maintaining their advantage for much of the overtime. However, missed free throws by Moeller provided the Elks with a crucial opportunity, and Eli Greenberg's clutch free throws tied the game at 63-63, forcing a second overtime.

In the second overtime, both teams battled fiercely, exchanging baskets and defensive stops. With the game tied at 67-67, Moeller briefly took the lead with free throws, but the Elks responded with poise and determination. In the final seconds, Jonathan Powell drained a deep 3-pointer to secure a remarkable 70-69 victory for Centerville.

The heroes for the Elks were numerous, with Jonathan Powell leading the scoring with 20 points, including the game-winning shot. Jamar Montgomery contributed 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Baboucarr Njie's stellar performance included 15 points, 14 rebounds, and a thunderous dunk. Eli Greenberg's clutch free throws under pressure also played a pivotal role in the Elks' victory.

With this memorable win, the Centerville Boys Varsity Basketball Team improves to 19-8 overall and extends their winning streak to six games. They now set their sights on the State Semi-Final, where they will face Toledo Whitmer on Saturday, March 23rd, at 8:30 pm at UD Arena.
