The Elks traveled to Beavercreek High School on Friday night to take on the Beavers in weather that could only be described as hurricane-like. With the remnants of Hurricane Helene moving through the Miami Valley, both teams not only battled each other but also faced the relentless rain and wind throughout the night.
The Elks kicked off the game into the wind, attempting a short pooch kick that went out of bounds, giving Beavercreek good field position at their own 35-yard line. However, Centerville’s defense stepped up, forcing a quick three-and-out. Taking over at their own 33-yard line, the Elks marched down the field with five running plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Parker Johnson. This gave Centerville a 7-0 lead with 6:48 left in the first quarter.
Beavercreek answered with a big third-down pass and an 18-yard touchdown run by their quarterback. But Centerville’s special teams blocked the extra point, keeping the score at 7-6 in favor of the Elks with 3:04 left in the first.
From there, the Elks took full control of the game. Early in the second quarter, quarterback Shane Cole ran 34 yards for a touchdown, increasing the lead to 14-6. Another defensive stop by Centerville gave them the ball back, and Johnson added another touchdown with a 3-yard run, making it 21-6 midway through the second quarter.
The Beavers struggled on their next possession, and a bad snap on a punt gave Centerville the ball at Beavercreek’s 3-yard line. Johnson scored his third touchdown of the night, extending the lead to 28-6. Centerville’s defense then forced a fumble, which led to a 14-yard touchdown pass from Cole to JP Mercer. After another Beavercreek fumble, Cole connected with Gavin Monturo for a 24-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 41-6. The scoring explosion continued when Centerville defensive lineman Mason Keely scooped up another fumble and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown. By halftime, the Elks had surged to a 48-6 lead, scoring 41 points in the second quarter alone.
With a running clock in the second half, Beavercreek managed to add a late score, but it wasn’t enough to challenge Centerville, as the Elks secured a 48-13 victory.
The win improves Centerville’s record to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in GWOC play. Currently ranked #2 in the Division I, Region 2 playoff standings, the Elks have faced tough competition this season, with their three losses coming against teams with a combined 10 wins and their 3 wins against teams with a combined 11 wins. The Elks hope to build on this momentum as they prepare for a crucial matchup at Miamisburg on Friday, October 4th. Tickets are available online at or with cash at the gate ($9).
