The varsity football team’s incredible season came to an end Friday night with a tough 49-10 loss to the Moeller Crusaders in the State Semi-Final playoff game at Princeton High School. Moeller showed why they are one of the best teams in the state, taking control early and never looking back.
The Crusaders made a statement on their very first play from scrimmage, scoring on a 66-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0 just seconds into the first quarter. However, the Elks didn’t back down. Centerville’s defense stepped up when senior Jacob Taylor intercepted a Moeller screen pass. This set up junior quarterback Shane Cole, who connected with junior Parker Johnson for a 10-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter.
Unfortunately for the Elks, that was the last time they would score a touchdown. Moeller took over from there, scoring 42 unanswered points before halftime to lead 49-7. With a running clock in effect for the second half, the Elks played with heart and determination, holding the Crusaders scoreless the rest of the way. Centerville’s only points in the second half came from a stunning 50-yard field goal by senior kicker Leland Gantz in the third quarter.
Despite the loss, the Elks have plenty to be proud of. They played with grit and determination all season, finishing with an impressive 11-4 record and making a deep playoff run. The senior class, led by players like Jacob Taylor and Leland Gantz, helped elevate the program to new heights. The team’s effort and success have set the stage for future Elks squads to aim even higher.
Moeller proved to be a state championship contender on both sides of the ball. Still, Centerville showed resilience and toughness against a very talented opponent.
To the Elks: congratulations on an amazing season! The future looks bright, and fans can’t wait to see what next year’s team will achieve. Great job, boys!
